Reserve Instructions and Policies

Reserve materials are items assigned a restrictive loan period to assure greater availability to students who have need to access them.

  • Faculty and administrators may place materials on reserve to be available for students in a specific course.

Please note that adhesive barcodes and security tags will be affixed to personal items placed on reserve. However, if requested, other options are available for example, barcodes and security tags can be affixed to library-provided book jackets to secure and circulate personal copies.

  • Alkek Library Reserve:

Faculty or administrators wanting to place items on reserve at the Alkek Library may bring the material to the Ask Alkek Desk (2nd floor) or send it through campus mail.

You will also need to submit a list of book titles, including call numbers for books owned by the library. Either complete the online reserve request or print out the “List of Materials to be Placed on Reserve” form, and send or bring the form to the library. For a small number of items, you may also send an email to AlkekReserve@txstate.edu listing authors, titles, call numbers, course, and desired loan period.

  • Items requested for reserve are usually ready for circulation within 1 week. However, at the beginning of the semester, due to increased volume, processing may be delayed several days. Please make your requests as far in advance as possible, to avoid a delay and backlog.

  • Loan period may be two (2) hours-building use only, overnight, two (2) days, or one (1) week as specified by the requester. Only two items can be borrowed at one time.

  • Reserve materials may not routinely be renewed due to restrictive loan period.

  • The fine for each item with a 2 hour checkout is $1.00 per hour or $5.00 per day with a maximum of $100.00 per item.  The fine for print articles is $1.00 per hour with a maximum of $20.00 per article. The fine for each item accrues until the item is checked in by a library staff member.

  • Borrowers are responsible for knowing when items are due. As a courtesy, the library sends an overdue notice. If items are still not returned, a bill is sent which shows the replacement cost of the unreturned items.

  •  a. In order to comply with the Copyright Law, the library makes only single copies of copyrighted materials. Upon request these can remain on reserve from semester to semester.

     b. If multiple copies are required, they must be provided by the requestor and produced in compliance with the Copyright Law.

     c. For non-copyrighted materials, the library will make up to two copies and, upon request, will retain them from semester to semester.

     d. 2-4 copies of examination materials may be placed on reserve depending upon the size of a class.

  • If Texas State classes are held off-campus, the library can often place materials from its collection on reserve in a library at or near the teaching location. This enables students to access a wider variety of items than the holdings of the local library.

        a. The library can provide books, documents, photocopies of periodical articles, or non-print materials.

        b. Minimum time required to set up this service is three weeks.

For more information concerning off-campus reserve, please contact the Distance Services Librarian, Stephanie Towery, at (512) 245-1090 or sst25@txstate.edu. The toll free number is (866) 255-3511.
