GIS And Data Visualization

The University Libraries provide spaces, technology, and support for Texas State Bobcats on various aspects of data visualization and geospatial data for research, teaching, and learning.

What is GIS?

GIS is the acronym for Geographic Information Systems which simply stands for a computer-based system for the compilation, management, analysis, and display of geographic information (in other words, visualization of geographical data). The system comprises mainly of computer hardware and software, geographic data, procedures or techniques and skilled personnel.

In GIS, real-world features captured as data are represented as either vector or raster (imagery) formats. These geographically referenced data are often associated with some extra descriptive information described as attributes. A GIS application displays datasets as layers; each layer represents a particular feature of interest captured from the real world: e.g. buildings, transport networks, population, political boundaries, rivers, elevation etc. A GIS analysis essentially is based on either the geographic relationship among the layers or their attribute information.

In the GeoSpace, researchers can use the technology and find support with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online Web Mapping, StoryMapping, and more.

What is Data Visualization?

Transform your data into clear, impactful visuals with our data visualization tools and support. Data visualization is the practice of converting complex data into easy-to-understand graphics, such as charts, graphs, and maps, to reveal trends and insights. Whether you're working on research, assignments, or presentations, we can help you choose the right visualization for your data. From bar charts and line graphs to heat maps and interactive dashboards, we offer a variety of options to bring your data to life and help you communicate your findings effectively.
